A year ago this past Wednesday an earthquake hit Haiti and really devastated this country. An article was written in TIME FOR KIDS recently discussing this tragedy and explaining how this poor country is still trying to rebuild itself.

Read the article that is linked to this blog and leave a comment about what you read. Think about these questions when you read and comment:

1. How do you think the people of Haiti feel now a year later?
2.Why was the earthquake such a complete devastation to the country?
3.After a year, why do you think the country is STILL living in tents with rubble from the earthquake all around?
4.What other problems have risen up since the earthquake that are hurting the people of Haiti?
5. Why do you think those problems happened?

Also, feel free to post questions about what you read as well.

THE LARGEST EARTHQUAKE IN 240 YEARS!!!!!!wow, that earthquake was really bad! Also the fact that its a really poor place makes this place in peices. Like I said about givng money to hati would really help them! Even if someone just gave them a nickel. I feel so sorry for the people in Hati. I'm sure alot of people that live in other places in the United States feel sorry and give money to Hati too. People stop talking about Hati now and I thought Hati was OK during the summer but now that I laerned about this in fourh grade,I'm all about trying to help Hati. Someday i want to help the people that live in a tent, and stop that contgous deasise!!!

ALL: There are organizations that do collect money for places like Haiti. It would be very interesting to locate some of those as a class! If you find one please post the web address in our discussion. We will talk about if they are a valid source or not.

REMINDER: Don't forget we are to post a comment and post about SOMEONE ELSE'S comment. This is what makes it a good discussion! Awesome job so far everyone! I LOVE reading your ideas!

Oh my goodness!!!! I can't believe how much i didn't know about Hati!!! For a whole year i thought that Hati was all right, and didn't even set my mind on doing anything!!! I mean, just think about how our school is the biggest shool in the Little Rock school district, and how we're so proud of it. When kids in Hati would just be proud to have any school at all! We have so much to be thankful for, but I'm sure if we were to give the people of Hati a sheet that asked them what they were thankful for, they would have a pretty hard time filling it out!!

Good point Madeline. It is odd to think that it's been a year already!!! You were also talking about the cholera, and when you really look into it,you think, the people there must be pretty unsanitary if so many people catch cholera their when I haven't one thing about someone catching it anywhere near here. Which is just another thing to add on to the "THANKFUL FOR" list!

It's called... and I quote, FOOD FOR THE POOR!!! you can also just type into your computer, CHARITIES THAT PROVIDE DONATIONS FOR HATI!!!

I found a website that you can ues to donate to Haiti. This one is through my church: http://www.er-d.org/haiti

Here's another one that my mom heard about on the radio: www.hopeforhaiti.com

When I read the article, I learned a lot of things, especially that after a year, a county in poverty can still be affected by an earthquake. I am surprised that they haven't cleaned up very much. There are a lot of people giving lots of money.

Amazing discussions and these are 9 and 10 year olds!? wow. You guys are exceptional students and it is so refreshing to see there are kids as young as you who want to take action when there is a need. Haiti is in terrible shape and will take a lot of help to get back to where it was before (which was terrible to begin with). What if America had the same kind of earthquake? How do you think we and the world would respond? Food for thought.
